How to move WITH your kids!

Adding a move to your toddler, tween, or adolescent drama is a great way to spice things up. Let's face it: Changing schools, saying goodbye to friends, and giving up a childhood bedroom all have the potential to make relocation a tough — if not downright painful — experience. It doesn't have to be that way, though.

1. GET YOUR KIDS INVOLVED IN THE MOVE

Enlist your children as part of the team for everything from choosing a new home to packing up valuables – after all, this is a family event.

As you browse for a home in your new community, give them a vote. This may be as basic as looking at photographs online with them as you narrow down your search or bringing them along on home tours. Inquire about their thoughts, learn their advantages and disadvantages, and take their advice into account while making your decision.

Send them to their rooms, accompanied by a few boxes to pack.

2. TAKE YOUR KIDS ON A RECON TRIP TO YOUR NEW TOWN WITH YOU.

Negotiate a visit to your new city as part of your relocation package if you're relocating for employment, and bring your kids along. Make the journey into a mini-vacation by exploring the neighbourhood, especially places with kid-friendly activities like parks, playgrounds, and the closest ice cream shop. When your children are familiar with the sights and sounds of their new community, they will feel more at ease when you move there permanently.

3. ESTABLISH CONNECTION WITH OTHER PARENTS

This is a win-win situation for both you and your children. Make use of your social media networks to make new contacts. Isn't it true that everyone knows someone? Alternatively, if you are relocating for work, ask your new HR director to connect you to local parent groups. Do you have toddlers and need to relocate? Weekly story times or playgroups can be found at the library. They're a convenient method for you and your children to meet possible friends, which is crucial to settling in and feeling at ease. If you're relocating during the summer, when area swimming pools are the social heart of neighbourhood activity, your local YMCA or community centre might be a great place to meet new people for older kids.

4. ALLOW YOURSELF ENOUGH TIME TO PREPARE.

Friends coming in to wish you well, neighbourhood going-away parties, and, certainly, the odd breakdown of one of your children — or you — will all be part of the transition phase as you wind down time in your previous house and come closer to moving day. Allow for some buffer time to account for unanticipated delays. Consider PODS portable moving containers, which provide you the flexibility to take as much time as you need. Literally. You have the freedom to relocate at your own speed since the containers are simply outside your driveway until you arrange them to be picked up and transferred to your new house.

We know that moving with a family, especially young children can be a difficult task for anyone to partake in. We hope that some of these simple, straightforward list objectives will help yourself and your family relocate in one piece. Remember ! Patience is absolutely key to a successful victory here, and take solace that it's typically a very short period of time to complete.
