You had a mouse or rat infestation in your house, but you believe the pest control specialist you hired got rid of all the vermin. But how can you tell whether you're free of an infestation? Is the faeces you discovered behind the cabinets old or new?
Here are some of the tell - tale problems associated with these little critters.
1. You've spotted their droppings!
The colour of fresh droppings is black and wet. When rat and mouse droppings dry up and grow old and grey, they crumble readily when touched. Near food packages, in drawers or cabinets, beneath sinks, in concealed corners, and along rat pathways are the most likely places to find droppings. The most droppings will be discovered where the rats are nesting or feeding, therefore check the area around the new-found droppings to see if the infestation is still active (or new).
2. There is an unpleasant odour lingering.
In locations where rodents are present, cats and dogs (or even a pet rat or mouse) may become active and agitated. This is caused by the odour of rat urine and is particularly common when rodents have just entered a structure. Get a flashlight and search the area for rats or mice if you notice your pet pawing at an area in which it had previously shown little interest. If you have a significant infestation, you may notice a persistent stale ammonia odour emanating from concealed locations, which indicates an active infestation.
3. There's pathways that have been well used.
Rodent runways and footprints are likely to be noticeable if rats are actively active in or around your home, becoming fainter as time passes. A flashlight or blacklight held at an angle toward the suspicious region is the best technique to identify tracks or runways. Smudge markings, footprints, urine stains, and droppings may be seen.
If you suspect a rodent infestation, consider sprinkling a thin layer of flour or baby powder over the area. If rats are present, their tracks will most likely be visible in the powder.
4. You've uncovered some of their nests.
Rodents will construct their nests out of shredded paper, fabric, or dried plant debris. If these locations are discovered along with any other indicators of current infestation (new droppings, gnawing, stench, or tracks), your property is most likely still infested.
5. You can hear them scratching around!
If you hear noises in the middle of the night, it's possible that you have mice or rats in your house. They might be heard darting beneath the floorboards, around the cupboards, or burrowing behind walls and joists. You might even hear squeaking noises from them.
There are many more ways to tell of a rat infestation, but these are the most common. We suggest hiring an expert to take care of them at the source and eliminating the future possibility for the critters to get in. They can cause serious damage, health issues and risks, and should be taken seriously.
